Care & Maintenance

Mohawk floors are designed with easy care in mind

Engineered Wood

  • Dust mop, sweep and/or vacuum the floor regularly to remove any particles that could scratch the floor.
  • WARNING: Vacuums with beater bar or power rotary brush head should never be used on wood flooring.
  • Use a microfiber mop for dust mopping. Pay close attention to mop head. Once soiled, replace with a fresh one. Launder soiled mop heads without fabric softener. Fabric softener residue may cause streaking on the floors.
  • Never damp mop wood flooring unless covered by Wet Resistance Warranty or greater wet warranty.* If flooring product allows, occasionally damp mop with water only.
  • Never wet mop wood flooring unless covered by Waterproof or WetProtect® Warranty.* If flooring product allows, occasionally wet mop with water only, using a well wrung-out mop.
  • If needed, use 1 cup of vinegar per gallon of water or 1/3 cup non-sudsing ammonia per gallon of water.
  • Never steam mop wood flooring unless covered by Steam Mop Warranty.*
  • Flood mopping is never recommended since mop water may damage flooring and leave spots.
  • Do not pour liquid directly on the floor or use an excessively wet mop.
  • Do not allow liquid to puddle or leave moisture standing on the floor.
  • Allow floor to dry completely before replacing interior mats.

*Refer to the Mohawk Limited Wood Warranty Brochure for more information

  • Remove spills promptly. Do not allow topical moisture to remain on the floor.
  • Immediately use an absorbent cloth to remove as much of the liquid as possible.
  • Mist a clean microfiber cloth with a Mohawk recommended cleaner, if needed, and rub the area, working from the outside of the area toward the center.
  • Take care to wipe the surface thoroughly.
  • Do not allow liquids to stand or remain on the surface of the flooring to reduce spotting.

Products and Tools to Avoid:

  • Do not use oil soaps, wax, detergents, abrasive cleaners, polishes, or other household products to clean the floor.
  • Vacuums with beater bar or power rotary brush head should never be used on wood flooring.
  • Never use power scrubbers to clean the floor.

Carpet

  • Vacuum your carpet regularly to prevent soil from embedding itself in the pile.
  • Depending on the type of carpet you have, you'll want to use a vacuum with a rotating brush, a beater bar, or suction only.
  • Keeping traffic and other use factors in mind, consider professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months.
  • Use scissors to clip sprouts and snags. Don't pull on them—you might damage the carpet.
  • If your carpet is burned, simply remove the tops of the dark, burnt fibers with curved fingernail scissors. If the burn is extensive, you may need to patch or replace it.
  • Remove heavy furniture dents by stroking the dented area with the edge of a coin. You can also use a hair dryer or a steam iron, but be very careful not to touch the carpet with the iron.
  • For extensive water damage, consult professional cleaners to dry your carpet from the front and back
  • Always treat the affected area immediately. The longer the spill sits there, the harder it'll be to remove the stain.
  • For a food spill, gently remove as much solid material as you can with a spoon or a dull knife. Add water and blot, using detergent sparingly if needed. Then, using the highest suction function, vacuum back and forth, adding more water to the stain as you go until completely clean.
  • If you need a spot removal solvent, use a product approved by The Carpet and Rug Institute of America. Apply several drops to a clean white cloth and blot the carpet in an inconspicuous area. If you notice a change in the carpet color, consult a professional carpet cleaner.

Laminated Wood

  • Dust mop, sweep and/or vacuum the floor regularly to remove any particles that could scratch the floor.
  • WARNING: Vacuums with beater bar or power rotary brush head should never be used on wood flooring.
  • Only use vacuum tools designed for hard surfaces.
  • Use a microfiber mop for dust mopping. Pay close attention to mop head. Once soiled, replace with a fresh one. Launder soiled mop heads without fabric softener. Fabric softener residue may cause streaking on the floors.

Resilient / Vinyl

  • Sweep the floor regularly with a soft bristle broom to remove loose dirt.
  • For a deeper clean, a mop moistened with warm water and a non-abrasive, neutral PH floor cleaner will suffice.
  • Spills should be cleaned up immediately.
  • Prevent indentations and scratches by using non-staining floor protectors on the legs of chairs, appliances and all heavy furniture. Floor protectors should be at least one inch in diameter.
  • Do not flood floor or subject to standing water.
  • Protect your floor from tracked-in dirt by using mats at all outside entrances. Mats should have a non-rubberized backing and be marked as non-staining.
  • Avoid tracking-in tar or asphalt from driveways.
  • Avoid high heel shoes on your floor as they can cause permanent indentations.
  • Protect your floors against burns. Burns from cigarettes, matches or other extremely hot items can cause permanent damage.
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as this can cause discoloration.
  • Remove spills promptly. Do not allow topical moisture to remain on the floor.
